Creating your Ideal Art Space, No Matter Where you are
Have you ever dreamed of a perfect art studio? Maybe it’s a bright, airy space with lots of plants, a beautiful view, and enough room to get messy and creative. Perhaps you’ve imagined inviting collectors in for a visit or proudly sharing photos of your space on social media. If that sounds like you, you’re not alone!
The Reality of Many Creative Spaces
Let’s be real: not all of us have a magazine-worthy space to create. Some of us, myself included, have spaces we’re grateful to have, even if they’re far from our dream studios.
My vision? I imagine a studio with large windows to let in plenty of natural light, a view of trees in the distance, a big table, and lots of plants to bring life into the room. I dream of being in an old-style farmhouse that feels cozy and authentic. But here’s the reality: I’m in Wisconsin, and winters here are serious business. So while I want those windows, they won’t go up to the ceiling—I’ve got to be practical!
Until that vision becomes a reality, I’m making the most of what I have. And I’ve realized that your current setup doesn’t need to be "perfect" to be meaningful or effective.
My Current Studio Setup
Right now, my studio includes:
An Art Supply and Inspiration Corner; This is where I keep the tools I need close at hand, as well as a few personal items to keep me motivated. Having my supplies within arm’s reach helps me dive into creative flow quickly, even if my space is compact.
A Multifunctional Desk; My desk doubles as both a workspace and a creative table. When I’m ready to paint, I clear away my laptop, paperwork, and anything admin-related. This is where I create my abstract art pieces for collectors and even set up photo shoots for social media. Is it glamorous? Not exactly. But I’m proud of the work I create here.
The Power of a Dedicated Creative Space
While my current setup isn’t my dream space, it’s the place where I create my work and build my business. What matters most is that I have a dedicated spot to keep working toward my vision. If you’re in the same boat, remember: your creative space doesn’t need to be grand to be powerful.
Tips for Building Your Own Creative Space
Wherever you are on your journey, here are a few ideas to help make your space your own:
1. Claim a Spot
Whether it’s a corner of a room, a small desk, or an entire studio, find a dedicated area for your art. This way, you’ll always have a place to create, even if it’s small.
2. Bring In What Inspires You
Add quotes, put up a vision board, or keep a few objects nearby that spark creativity. This personal touch can go a long way in making a space feel like your own.
3. Organize for Easy Access
Keeping your supplies within reach makes it easier to jump into work. Use shelves, carts, or containers to organize your materials, so they’re ready when you are.
4. Decorate with Your Vision in Mind
Even if you’re not in your dream studio yet, decorating with your vision in mind can help keep you motivated. Little touches like a favorite plant or a picture of your ideal studio can remind you of where you’re headed.
5. Embrace the Journey
Dream big, but embrace the steps along the way. Every moment spent creating brings you closer to your ideal studio.
No matter where you are, create, and remember that your art matters and the world needs it. You’re building towards your dream one step at a time, so start with the space you have. Someday, you’ll look back and realize how meaningful this part of the journey was.
